Come and join this fun and informal group to discuss the chosen book/s with our wonderful head librarian, Lucy Atherton, and fellow members of the Wellington Community. This session will be in person and nibbles and drinks will be provided. At this session we will be reading and discussing two books: ‘Wild Swans’ by Jung Chang and ‘The Secret River’ by Kate Grenville.
If you haven’t read it before ‘Wild Swans’ by Jung Chang is an incredible memoir of three generations of Chinese woman. This is Jung Chang’s family memoir – through the lives of three generations of women, this book tells the story of 20th-century China. Beginning with the author’s grandmother in 1924, continuing with the experiences of the mother and finishing with the daughter who grew up during the Cultural Revolution.
‘The Secret River’ by Kate Grenville had come to Lucy’s attention through the Big Jubilee Read. This historical novel follows the life of William Thornhill, an early 19th Century waterman in London, living in desperate poverty with his family, who is transported to Australia for theft. The story explores what might have happened when Europeans colonised land already inhabited by Aboriginal people.
