Darcy Bourne (C 20) is a GB Hockey Player and has recently set up Raising Her Game, a charity which works to improve the lives of young girls from underprivileged backgrounds through sport. RHG offers free sports opportunities to girls in lower-socioeconomic communities who wouldn’t otherwise get the chance to play – ultimately aiming to break down barriers to participation and to improve diversity and representation in women’s sport from the grassroots up.
On starting RHG, Darcy says:
“Sport has brought me joy, growth and countless opportunities. Everyone deserves to experience the benefits sport offers, but unfortunately it isn’t accessible for, and inclusive of everyone. We need to change this. Not many people look like me in my sport. I’m the only person of colour in my England and GB teams. I’ve never had many teammates or a role model in my sport that looks like me. I want to do my part to make sure that this isn’t the case for any girls or boys.
Raising Her Game will create spaces where girls and their families will feel welcome, comfortable, safe and inspired regardless of their race, religion or financial background. I’m determined to break barriers, provide role models and inspire a generation of diverse little girls to pursue their dreams.”
RHG runs free girls-only sports sessions in state primary schools in London, delivering free multi-sport camps in the holidays (where all food and equipment are provided), and offering bursaries for the families to join our partner sports clubs so that they can continue to play sport, without a financial burden.
