Exploring ‘Life Beyond Wellington’ through Careers Speed Networking

27 March 2026

On Saturday 21 March, nearly 150 students took part in a lively Careers Speed Networking event, designed to spark curiosity, build confidence and develop real-world communication skills.

The session brought together an impressive group of 34 parent and Old Wellingtonian volunteers, representing a wide range of industries including entrepreneurship, finance, law, healthcare, politics and journalism. Through a series of short, timed conversations, students rotated around the room, meeting multiple professionals and gaining valuable insight into different career pathways.

This fast-paced format encouraged students to ask thoughtful questions, practise introducing themselves and refine their networking skills in a supportive environment. For many Lower School students, it was their first experience of professional networking, while Sixth Form students gained practical advice to support their next steps beyond College.

With a focus on early career pathways, we were especially pleased to welcome six Old Wellingtonians back to College, our highest number of OW volunteers to date. Archer Wyld (R 25, right) spoke about Degree Apprenticeships and how he secured his role at Bentley Motors through work experience gained while at College. Will Smith (S 20) and Ted Johnson (Bn 20) shared insights into the transition from university into early careers, emphasising the importance of networking in securing a first role. Will noted that he attended every Speed Networking event while at school and even secured work experience through those connections, making his return as a volunteer particularly meaningful.

Rayyan Islam (R 19) and Neil Bidston (A 90) provided an overview of medical career pathways and the diverse opportunities within the profession, while Alex Jaggs (Hl 02) and Richard Ward (T 99) offered perspectives on careers in architecture and submarine engineering.

They were joined by 28 parent volunteers, with a third of all participants having supported this event previously. We are hugely grateful for this continued commitment, and to all those who return year after year having seen the benefit to students. These events simply would not be possible without the generosity of our volunteers. From everyone in the Community Team, thank you!

We are incredibly grateful to our parent and alumni community for giving their time and expertise, and we look forward to building on this success with future careers events.
