On Friday 10th May, our Singapore OWs played a friendly golf match against the Singapore Old Etonians. Read the Match Report by our OW Singapore Rep, Will Jelf (Hg 96) below.
The Singapore OW vs OE golf match had been long talked about and finally organised by the two skippers Jelf (Hg 91-96) and Eton’s Vaulkhard.
Thanks to a tropical rainstorm on arrival, our tee off time was delayed by 2 hours. Once we finally got going, we decided to play a Texas scramble, two fourballs, an Eton buggy and a Wellington buggy. We didn’t negotiate shots so each buggy played off scratch.
The Etonians got off to a flyer, 5 down after 6. Wellington, the opposite. The scores at the turn were Eton 5 under, and OWs 5 over- a lot of ground to catch up on. Rich Gower (Pn 99-04) played brilliantly throughout and kept the side together, assisted on occasion by Jelf. Dom Morrison (T00-05) and Will Blaney (A00-05) found it tough to begin with but contributed well on the back nine, where we managed to scrape par. Special mention to Blaney, who on the 18th, had a lovely up & down in the dark, under phone light. Eton also parred the back nine, winning the match by 10 shots.
In hindsight, a different format may have helped us, maybe not the overall result, but a closer margin. Eton were the better golfers and our enthusiasm during the rain delay probably impaired our start.
