Annual Schools Alumni Race – The Results Are In!

05 January 2021

OWXC took part in the Annual Schools Alumni Race over the weekend of 12th/13th December. Normally it would be run as a proper race on Wimbledon Common; however, as with most events throughout 2020, it had to be completed virtually. This certainly did not dampen spirits as there were 39 OW entrants out of a total 310 from 29 different schools, so huge congratulations to everyone who took part.

Individually, our first male finisher was Matthew Blagg (30th overall) and first female was Natalie Blagg (21st out of 51 ladies). Interestingly our second men and women finishers were Rod Shephard and Tammy Jordan (nee Shephard), again brother and sister.

Our closest to winning one of the various trophies was in the V40 men: our top three (Matthew, Andy McKimmie, Peter Davy) coming 2nd (out of 29 teams) – a superb effort. Our only three in the V60 (Simon Cox, Gary Lloyd, Edmund Hayward) were 3rd out of 17 teams. Our top three ladies (Natalie, Tammy, Sophie Graham-Nicoll) came 6th out of the 15 teams. In the Open Trophy, our top four (Matthew, Rod, Ian Picton, Ed Dymoke) were 11th out of the 20 schools who were able to raise four or more runners.

Yes, the numbers were good but the real result was the tremendous team unity, somehow coming together from all over the world (New York, Singapore, Denmark and all parts of the UK) to run the required 5 miles on a muddy cross country course. This video (courtesy of Charlie King) tells the story.
