Aisosa Akenzua (Hg 24) came to Wellington from Kingsford Community College in East London and is currently studying Sociology and Global Sustainable Development at the University of Warwick.
I applied for the PAF scholarship because I wanted to join a community that values diversity and individuality. The idea of being part of a place where I could bring my unique perspective and experiences, rather than simply adapting to a predefined culture, was incredibly appealing. I was part of a place which celebrates differences where you are not forced to fit into a culture but encouraged to add to it.
At Wellington, I was constantly encouraged to push my limits through academic challenges, leadership opportunities, or extracurricular involvement. The support from teachers, mentors, and friends helped me grow into a more confident and resilient version of myself. It wasn’t just about what I learned in the classroom but also about discovering my strengths and finding my voice.
Whilst at College, I received my Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award and was captain of the girls’ basketball U18 team, which taught me much about leadership and teamwork. I’ve also used my passion to participate in activities that have been a source of joy and personal achievement, such as coaching and refereeing for Basketball England. These experiences have helped me develop skills that will benefit me in the future.
My favourite part of College life was the sense of belonging and the friendships I formed along the way. I loved the lively discussions with peers, late-night study sessions, and the thrill of working on projects together. I also cherished the extracurricular activities, like basketball and musical theatre, which allowed me to explore my interests and unwind from academic pressures. The memories I made during these moments are ones I’ll always carry with me.
I would definitely recommend the PAF scholarship to anyone who aspires to grow academically and personally. This program does more than support you financially—it provides access to incredible opportunities, a supportive community, and a platform for opportunity and to showcase your potential. It’s a chance to thrive in an environment that values your individuality and helps you achieve more than you thought possible.
My hopes and ambitions for the future include making a meaningful impact in the social and legal sector. Ultimately, I hope to inspire others, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds who might feel limited by their circumstances, to pursue their goals and realise their potential. I want to be a role model and show that with determination, support, and the right opportunities, anything is possible.
